Syb van Breda has been invited by IQPC to speak at the Bridges Middle East Conference in Doha, Qatar this november and present the award winning Hobbema 2.0 bridge as international case study for sustainable bridge design. The lecture will be held the 29th of November 2011.
Lecture Syb van Breda at the world-classcities congres in Istanbul
The British media Architectural Journal and New Civil Engineer have invited Syb van Breda for a lecture
on sustainable redesign in the city, at the three day conference World-ClassCities in Istanbul from the 27th until the 30th of june 2011.
The central theme of this multi-disciplinary conference is: "Future proofing urbanisation and economic growth
through sustainable design and development in the built environment".
Syb van Breda & Co architects and SBM Bouwmanagement have collectively entered the first phase of the competition for the design of the new city hall of Almelo. In total 19 offices and combinations have expressed their interest. Much to our joy and amazement this procedure is dealt with in all openness.
Syb of Breda & Co exhibits its designs of the Haagse Hogeschool Delft and the Foot / Bicycle bridge Hobbema 2.0 in Zoetermeer on the exhibition 'Sustainability is…' at the Rijnlands Architecture Platform in Leiden. Comes and see!
Syb van Breda & Co, architects, Arhikod en Fey projects have made a film of the future N3MP park between Zoetermeer, Den Haag and Delft. This park functions as a water storage with a capacity of millions of cubic meters in case of extreme and prolonged rain fall. Next to this the park will be a recreation area for thousands of inhabitants of the neighbouring cities. The park will be reached by the Hobbema 2.0 bridge, designed by our office. The client organisation of this project is a unique collaboration of the Water boards Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland and Delfland, the province Zuid Holland and local authorities Zoetermeer, Den Haag and Leidschendam Voorburg.

The most sustainable building for education in the Netherlands
It is widely known that the Netherlands performs relatively poorly in energy innovation and that action is urgently needed. The building industry is responsible for about 40% of the total use, so here significant progress can be made. Subsequently energy efficiency features high on the agenda in current architectural competitions and selections, such as for the new Faculty of Education of the University of Arnhem and Nijmegen (HAN).
Designers were challenged to present a maximum sustainable concept, with a proven minimum energy use, within a fixed budget and program of requirements. To determine the energy performance, the Greencalc calculation method of the Ministery of Housing was obligatory. A minimum score of 500 points had to be reached.
Obviously a vision on an assignment of this complexity needs a multidisciplinary design team. So once our combination (Syb van Breda & Co, architects and de Architekten Cie) was invited to participate in the competition, we have put together a “dream team” of the best consultants in the Netherlands: DWA (sustainability and installation consultant), ABT (design engineer) and Peutz ( building physics). With this team we have produced a revolutionary sustainable concept, the only one in the competition that met all the requirements: well embedded in its urban environment, maximum functionality, within the budget and attaining an unprecedented high sustainability score of 712 Greencalc points (By comparison, the building for The Hague University in Delft, currently the most sustainable education building in the Netherlands, has reached a Greencalcscore of 257 points).
Unfortunately the plan was not selected for construction, why is not clear to us.

Honorable mention competition Sustainable Floating House
Employees Maikel Waterdrinker and Nicolai Waterdrinker have been rewarded with their plan ARC80 with an honorable mention. The jury praised the plan for its accountability to the environment and the original idea for the roof to work as a purifier for the surrounding water. The submitted design can be seen onwww.eatmyhouse.nl
The Preliminary Design of foot/cycle bridge Hobbema 2.0 has been approved by the client, the Municipality of Zoetermeer. The final design process has begun now. in the coming months the design will be prepared for tender. Also now we have to prove the high ambitions: an energy production of 3 times the bridge's need and fully recyclable materials. The expected handover for tender is in September 2010.
Out of 38 submissions, 13 nominations and 3 finalists, the building of
Haagse Hogeschool Delft has been declared winner of the Dutch National
Future Energy Trophee 2010.

Syb has been appointed Associé at Boer & Croon Ruimtelijke Investeringen
Syb van Breda & Co is growing. Thanks to the increase of our assignments in the last few months we have now made the giant leap to our own office. As of the August 15th of 2009 our organisation operates from the house Papengracht 34, opposite the National Museum of Antiquities, in the middle of the historic centre of the city of Leiden. On this spot we have space to grow for years and it is a inspiring place to collaborate. Getting there both by public transport and by car is easy. Leiden Central Station and carpark Haagweg are both just a few minutes walking from the office.

Sustainability, in the widest sense of the word, is one of the most difficult subjects to grasp. For a start it is in the word itself. Surely a concrete Atlantik Wall bunker on the Dutch coast is a sustainable structure. Despite the onslaught of bombs, time, vandals and the salty winter winds, most of them are still in a pretty immaculate state.
April 1st is the official starting date of Syb van Breda & Co. A new architectural practice, based on 20 years of experience, but with the focus ahead, beyond the crisis. We wish our clients and partners a future just as bright as we expect our own to be.
